Berklee Professor Victor Mendoza Presents Original Compositions and Series of Clinics in Tenerife, Spain

 

donVictor Mendoza—Berklee professor, vibraphonist, and composer—will present two original compositions at the Tenerife Auditorium on November 29. The Tuopali Duo formed by Paco Diaz Martín and Charli Llácer, percussionists of the Tenerife Symphonic Orquestra will perform "Son del volcán," a piece for vibraphone and marimba; the percussion quartet Tak-Nara will interpret "Piedra Negra," a piece for two marimbas, vibraphone, and multipercussion. Both groups are considered among the best percussion ensembles in Spain. The concert is sponsored by the Tenerife Auditorium.

Mendoza will also conduct two clinics at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Canarias in Tenerife on November 26–27. 

In two three-hour sessions he will teach the following subjects:
November 26: Technique for keyboard percussion, composing for keyboard percussion
November 27: Improvisation concepts for classical musicians, Latin jazz improvisation
The clinics are intended for students of the Canary Islands Conservatory of Music but are also open to other conservatory students and to the general public.

Clinics are free. Twenty spots are reserved for available active student participants, with the remaining capacity dedicated to listeners.

Considered by critics around the world to be one of today’s finest Latin jazz artists, Mexican-born vibraphonist and composer Victor Mendoza performs with his own group and as a guest soloist around the globe. Recent presentations include guest appearances with the World Festival Orchestra under the direction of Paquito D’Rivera, the Milan Svoboda Orchestra in Prague, sold-out shows at Queen Elizabeth Hall in London and in Tel Aviv, and as soloist with the Carlos Chávez Symphony Orchestra in Mexico City.

Recent presentations include a solo appearance with the 85-piece Banda del Puerto in Valencia, Spain, under the direction of award-winning conductor Isidro Coll Ballesteros, as well as an upcoming guest appearance with the Granada Symphony in Spain.

Previous recordings and performances with his own group, as well as with artists such as Paquito D’Rivera, Claudio Roditi, and Giovanni Hidalgo have earned him the respect of critics and jazz fans around the globe. Mendoza’s recording This is Why led Latin Beat Magazine to name him one of the Outstanding Latin Jazz Artists of the Year. Meanwhile, Black Bean Blues was named one of the best Latin jazz recordings of the year by Modern Drummer Magazine and led Jazziz Magazine to dub him“the genre’s leading vibraphone practitioner”and“one of today’s most resourceful composers.”

As a professor at Berklee College of Music and as a clinician for Yamaha and Vic Firth, Mendoza has earned an international reputation as a jazz educator, regularly conducting master classes at major music schools, universities, and music conferences around the world.
